Almost everybody asks it, usually in the first ten minutes, and usually with an apology attached: how long does this go on for?
The honest answer is that I do not know, and neither does anyone else. That answer is useless as information and I have watched it land as a small cruelty on people who were only asking for something to hold on to.
So here is what I have instead. It takes longer than the version you would find acceptable, and less long than the version you fear at three in the morning. It does not run at a constant rate; most of it seems to happen in a few weeks that arrive without warning after months where nothing moved. And you will almost certainly not be able to tell it has ended until some time after it has.
The reason the question is worth asking anyway is that it is not really a question about duration. It is a question about whether this is survivable, and whether anybody has been here before. Those two have answers, and both answers are yes.
